As more construction firms consider using drones for information gathering, many are wondering what’s next for drones in construction? The latest construction-specific drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), can be programmed to fly over construction zones to capture birds-eye-view photos and video that can be used for site selection, surveying and visual project updates. Some drones can even send collected information directly to related construction software for use in 3D modeling.
As drone technology becomes more advanced and less expensive, questions rise regarding additional uses for UAVs. Here are few to consider:
Using Drones to Identify Potential Safety Hazards
Daily safety meetings are standard on many jobsites. Consider the benefits of daily drone fly-overs that identify new hazards and confirm the status of known safety issues. Information could be immediately shared with team members and corrective action taken before work starts.
Using Drones to Deliver Materials and Equipment to Workers at Heights
Builders are under more pressure than ever before to complete projects quickly, and with zero injuries. Falls are among the top causes for construction injuries and fatalities. Using drones to hoist materials and/or equipment to workers high above the ground could significantly reduce the risk of falls. Keeping workers in position and working would also result in greater productivity.
Using Drones to Build Structures
This may be a bit farther down the road, but the concept is feasible given the speed of development of new UAV technologies. Using drones in the actual building process becomes especially appealing when work is required in places that are unsafe for workers.
These are just a few of the possible uses for drones in construction. Do you have any uses for drones in construction not named here? Tell us in the comments section below.
