According to a panel of expert judges from across the industry, the best construction projects are leaders in innovation, safety performance, global teamwork, quality and success in overcoming challenges.

The 2014 Global Best Projects Awards were recently announced at the ENR+Dodge 2014 Global Construction Summit in New York City. The winners represent the best of what modern architecture, engineering and construction can do to make our world a better place for everyone. Here are a few of the winners that caught our attention:

Global Best Project of the Year and Best Education/Research:  Halley VI Antarctic Research Station

We’re pleased to say we spotted this one early. The $42 million project that allows British researchers live and work on the South Pole is a prime example of one of the unique benefits of modular construction. Halley VI was built offsite and transported to one of the most extreme climates on earth. That’s just cool (no pun intended). Read what we had to say about Halley VI here.

The latest addition to Winnipeg’s already beautiful skyline is nothing less than striking. The curvaceous $351 million structure by PCL Construction resembles a riverside spacecraft. One judge remarked: “The building’s irregular and nonrepetitive shape did not allow for the use of typical, repetitive construction techniques. As a result, very detailed coordination and meticulous planning had to be implemented at every step.”

Closer to home, the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh, PA created a 24,350-square-foot education, research and administrative facility that’s LEED Platinum and Four-Stars Sustainable Sites Initiative certified. The $15 million project was designed by local architecture firm The Design Alliance while professors from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University provided additional expertise. Part of the sustainable effort included the sourcing of all materials from within a 50-mile radius, something not easily done for any project large or small.
