Falls from heights continue to be the leading cause of injuries and fatalities on the jobsite. In 2016, OSHA issued 6,906 violations for fall protection (Standard: 1926.501), the most commonly cited violation. The Army Corps of Engineers recently began requiring comprehensive training for anyone supervising work done at heights. The requirement sets a higher standard for fall protection training that is likely to resonate throughout the construction industry.
Fall protection authorities LJB, Inc. created a 3-day course in accordance with the US ACE EM-385 and ANSI Z-359 family of standards. The course, titled Competent Person Fall Protection Training, was recently held at the ModSpace corporate office in Berwyn, PA for personnel from ModSpace, Procon Consulting, Infineum USA and Amtrak.
“We need to do everything possible to keep workers safe,” said ModSpace EHS Manager Paul Volkmer. “Training people to be competent in using the correct fall protection equipment, proper inspections, fall clearance requirements, risk assessments and proper rescue ensures the safety of all workers when working at heights.”
Key topics covered in the course include:
- Risk assessment
- Equipment inspection
- Components and anchorages
- Fall clearances
- Rescue
The Fall Protection course by LJB University was facilitated by Kevin Wilcox PE, CSP and done in accordance with the IACET standards. Contact LJB if you would like to host or attend a similar training.
